"Bloody hell, is that seriously on there? Not exactly light conversation, is it?" Albus pauses a second, considering his options. On one hand, he say no, and let them move on. On the other hand, he could say yes and make something up just to save Aster the pain of having to ask other people this question.
But maybe she doesn't mind? Albus leans in closer, and lowers his voice. "How badly do you want to win at bingo? Because I could say yes to this, and no one would dispute it." No one really disputes Albus' stories.
"Thestrals." She explains, turning the card round for him to see. "Could be a bit insensitive, couldn't it. If you can describe a thestral to me, ten words or more, I'll have absolutely no way of contradicting you, and I'll be happy to tell you about the time I pet a unicorn. Or another adventure, if you prefer." She really wasn't keen on asking around for stories of people's experiences with mortality, anyway, and one bad turn deserves another.
Albus claps his hands, then adopts a solemn expression befitting this very serious, very sad topic. He took Care of Magical Creatures to spend more time with Hagrid, and had dedicated himself to his studies with every ounce of the respect and love he had for his teacher.
"They're frightful when you see them for the first timeβall skeletal and reptilian, with these great leathery bat wings, and their call is this ghastly shriek. But the only terrible thing about them is that they're terribly sweet, and terribly smart." Considerably more than ten words, but Albus was always an overachiever. He smiles. "And actually, I would love it if... you could tell me about the time you lived abroad."
She leans in with her most empathetic face for this description, and you could swear her eyes were welling up a little at the plight of the noble thestral. "Fascinating." She murmurs, "Truly. And I'm so...so glad you at least got to meet them after...well." They don't need to go into fictional murders, so she waves it a way with a graceful sweep.
"Oh, it's funny you should mention, though. I did live abroad. Two whole years, when I was quite young. My mother had to work more, times were tight, so she sent me to my grandparents who were living in Greece. Beautiful country, I wish I could've seen more. They were awfully strict, but I snuck out every night to swim and look at the stars. I still send letters to some of my friends, there, but I had to come back to go to school."
This is, at best, an embellished vacation, but the roots are half true. She pauses, hoping it at least is going down a correct trajectory. "...If that helps."
Albus honestly can't tell that Aster is making things up until the very last words, and looks plainly enraptured by the sweet nostalgia conveyed in her story. "Wow. You are so good." He marks off another square on his sheet. "Do you want to stay in England? This isn't on the card, I'm just curious now."
